Tom Colquhoun is a distinguished advocate with the experience and expertise to handle even the most complex of cases.
Tom started his post-secondary education studying accounting and marketing at the University of Alberta. Obtaining his Bachelor of Commerce (Bcomm), Tom learned business strategy, organizational management, financial data interpretation and much more. Tom also honed his leadership skills at the University of Alberta. He became vice-president of Theta Chi: a fraternity at the University of Alberta. Deciding to continue his education after graduation, Tom attended University of Alberta to obtain his Bachelor of Laws (LLB). He graduated in 1981, became a member of the Bar Association in 1982, and began his legal career at Lefsrud & Cunningham that same year. Here, he applied his knowledge and expertise to help clients with a variety of legal issues. After several years, Tom moved to Duncan Craig LLP where he worked for 22 years and eventually became a senior partner.
In 2008, Tom left Duncan Craig LLP and began a sole family law practice. He spent years gaining experience in complex divorce matters and building relationships with his clients, but still aspired for more. Tom, together with other founding members, Dale Tumbach, Joanna Davidoff, Mark Demas, Jennifer Leung, and Sean Schaefer, created TC Family Law Group, an association for the practice of family law. Everyday, Tom applies his diverse skillset and experience to assist his clients and help them during their emotional strife.
Throughout his career, Tom has shown exceptional understanding of many legal fields but a favouritism for family law. The best part of Tom’s day is when he can finally slow down, relax, and talk to his clients before heading home.
In addition to being a practicing lawyer in Alberta, Tom is a member of the Law Society of Northwest Territories (1992) and Nunavut (2000). Further, Tom is trained and certified in Divorce and Family Law Mediation. He has experience litigating in the Provincial Court of Alberta, the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, the Alberta Court of Appeal, and the Court of Appeal in the Northwest Territories. He also volunteered his time with the Northwest Territories Law Society Disciplinary Committee.
Outside of his practice, Tom enjoys a variety of activities including working out at his local gym, snowboarding in the Rocky Mountains, and playing hockey or golf with his three sons and friends. Tom also enjoys experiencing and learning new cultures by travelling to various destinations around the globe.
